with Immersive 2.0Step back in time to the Edo period through cutting-edge technology and experience the world as seen by Katsushika Hokusai
The first exhibition of a next-generation art entertainment experience that pushes boundaries to create a never-before-seen immersive adventure and share Japanese cultural heritage with the world
We have launched the 'ANOTHER STORY' project, reimagining Japan's cultural heritage with the latest technology to create immersive experiences for audiences around the world. The first in this project, HOKUSAI: ANOTHER STORY in TOKYO, will be held at Tokyu Plaza Shibuya from Saturday, February 1, 2025 to Sunday, June 1, 2025.
The first 'ANOTHER STORY' project celebrates the legendary Edo period ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai's fascinating life and diverse body of work, widely appreciated as masterpieces, have had a significant impact on the Western art world. His iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa-oki nami ura), which has been selected as the design for the back of Japan's new 1,000-yen bill to be issued in July 2024, is attracting worldwide attention.
A new dimension of immersive experience that engages your senses
'HOKUSAI : ANOTHER STORY in TOKYO' offers a next-generation immersive adventure combining "visuals, sounds, and sensations". It's a journey back in time to the Edo world that Katsushika Hokusai lived in. Using ultra-high-definition image data and Sony's Crystal LED displays, this experience vividly brings Hokusai's iconic works, which are familiar to many, to life in stunning detail. Enhancing the immersion further, Sony’s tactile technology (haptics) creates sensations such as stepping on puddles or sandy beaches, so that you can feel the scenery and sensations that Hokusai himself might have encountered. Exclusive collaborations with brands representing Japanese craftsmanship will also be available during the exhibition. Additional updates on ticket details, exhibition content, and the advanced technologies that will enhance this experience will be announced soon.

The latest technologies featured in the exhibition include
Detailed Reproduction of Japanese washi paper fibers with 'patented DTIP technology'Ars Techne co.
The patented DTIP (3D Texture Image Processing) technology developed by Ars Techne Co. has been used to create ultra-high-resolution digital image data of Hokusai's works. These include the works on display at the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum which inspired the design of Japan's new 1,000-yen bill. This technology captures even the finest fiber of traditional Japanese washi paper, delivering an exceptional level of realism that allows viewers to appreciate the texture with their eyes.
High-definition imaging technology: Crystal LEDSony Corporation
Crystal LED is a scalable display system that combines ultra-realistic high-definition visuals with exceptional installation flexibility, even on large screens. It brings a whole new level of value to the visual communication experience with stunningly detailed and vibrant images that deliver an extraordinary sense of realism and immersion.
Interactive Haptics Technology for a Tactile ExperienceSony PCL Inc.
Haptics, also known as "tactile presentation technology," uses vibrations to artificially recreate and simulate the sensation of touch. These vibrations can range from delicate sensations to intense impacts, creating an immersive experience that feels as if you are physically engaging with your surroundings.
For this project, haptic technology integrates vibrating devices integrated into the floor which are synchronized with the visuals and sound to create interactive effects, such as making the floor feel like puddles or sandy beaches. Advanced sensors detect subtle changes in foot pressure and provide a range of feedback that responds to the user's movements. This innovative technology creates an experience that transcends physical boundaries, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in Hokusai's world like never before.
About Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎)(1760–1849, Hōreki 10-Kaei 2 in Japanese Hepburn)
Born in 1760 in Edo Honjo Warigesui (Sumida-ku, Tokyo), Hokusai trained as a carver of ukiyo-e woodblock prints from he was 14, and later became an apprentice of Katsukawa Shunsho aiming to be an artist. He published his first his nishiki-e prints in 1779. Following Shunsho's death, he left the Katsukawa school and worked on illustrations for kyoka (comic poetry) books and surimono decorative prints. In his late 40s, he collaborated with Kyokutei Bakin on illustrated books: New Illustrated Edition of the Suiko Garden (Shinpen Suiko den) and Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon, (Tsubakisetsu Yumiharizuki), which brought him widespread recognition.
In his 70s, he published a series of representative nishiki-e prints one after another in a few years, including some of his most iconic series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, (Fugaku Sanjūrokkei), which established landscape ukiyo-e as a new trend. In his final years, he focused on painting. As he brought innovation to the art of illustrated books and published many drawing instruction manuals including Hokusai Manga (Hokusai Manga), he contributed significantly to popularizing drawing techniques and educating the public. He is the founder of the Katsushika school, and it is said that he trained nearly 200 disciples there.
By the time he died in 1849, he had created over 30,000 works in a variety of genres, and it was said that he had "drawn everything in the universe". His works were later highly regarded overseas and inspired Impressionist painters, craftsmen as well as musicians. In 1999, Hokusai was the only Japanese selected in the American magazine Life's project '100 Most Influential People of the Second Millennium' and ranked 86th.
